Chapter Sixteen: Alex

“Where are we heading?” Luke thumped on Alex’s shoulder from the back seat. “Alex? Come on, give us something.”

“To my family home.”

“The estate?”

“No, the house downtown.”

“You mean the mansion.”

“Yeah.” Alex tapped the navigation system to life and tapped Home, though he knew the way perfectly well.

He couldn’t trust himself not to become so lost in thought and memory and lose his way. He couldn’t afford it. Not today. The towns zoomed by, the vineyards of other clans, the long fields and orchards, the small, snug little villages on hillsides.

He didn’t want to think.

But finally, Valerian asked the question Alex had been avoiding all along:

“When we find him, man, what do you wanna do with him?”

He gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white. “I don’t fucking know.”

“Alex...”

Sudden rage welled up in him. “He’s at my fathers’ house, making himself at home. After what he did to me.” He thumped his fist on the wheel. “I’m gonna skin him alive.”

The others were quiet.

“I can’t ask you to do this,” he said, slowing the car. “I should let you go back.”

“No way in hell. You skin him. I’ll feed him his balls. Val can fuck him with a thorny branch. I dunno. We’ll think of something creative.”

None of them laughed. It wasn’t funny, and they knew it. Alex also knew he wasn’t going to do any of that. He pushed that to the back of his mind.

He’d thought him dead, and it had been a solace. Finding out he was alive was a blunt blade cutting into his stomach, shredding it up.

“What the hell did he do to you, Alex?” Luke asked quietly.

“It’s better if you don’t know.”

“The hell you say. Take him to court. Denounce him to the police.”

“I can’t. What he did...” Alex let out a breath through gritted teeth. “It left no visible scars.”

They were all silent after that. There was no law in shifter lands to protect kids from such crimes. Unless an adult was caught red-handed, in the act, unless there was clear evidence such as photos or a video, well then... too damn bad.

They all knew it.

Occasionally victims took the law into their own hands, punishing their abuser. Was that what Alex was going to do? He’d never have to consider it because he’d thought his uncle dead in a house fire. He’d slept fine—as fine as his nightmares allowed, granted—and thought that he’d never have to wonder.

How his uncle survived.

Why he survived.

How that was justice. How that was fair.

It wasn’t.

“We got your back, man,” Val eventually said. “Whatever you need. And we’ll also hold you back when needed, I promise you that.”

It made Alex snarl, that promise, offered so quietly and thoughtfully when all he wanted was to scream and howl and shift, tear his uncle apart with his teeth and claws.

Truth was, maybe it was a good idea to have someone to stop him when the time came, or at least to try...
